Remember that IM discussion we had on which Earthworm Jim game was better, SNES or Genesis version? I was ousted 2-1 for support on the SNES version with said supposed better graphics, music, etc etc.
Well, after Skull gave me the SNES EWJ rom, I now say...
I dub thee both fools.
The Genesis version is still better, even without my biased opinion.
The SNES version looked like it used standard sprites, whereas the framerate on the Genesis version was higher, so it looked like "animotion" or whatever they called it. There was also ugly off-black colors surrounding Jim, while the Genesis version didn't.
Also, in the first level [the only one I bothered to play for SNES] the atmosphere of New Junk City is all light and stuff. It doesn't have the same, better dark atmoshere that the Genesis version had [and Skull, where is this "Neato Lightning Effect" that the SNES had, if I remember you saying that correctly.]
Now, with graphics covered, let me go over the sound.
In the SNES one, Jim's gun sounds like... well, a normal gun. The Genesis one had a more distinct, EWJ-esque sound effect. It doesn't sound like a machine gun, it sounds more like something Jim would use, a out-of-the-norm stubby plasma-thingy gun.
And, the voices.... oh, the voices. In the SNES version, the voices sound like cheap wav inputs with an off-tone mic. The Genesis one had clearer, crisper, sharper voices.
And MORE voices in the Genesis, too.
When Jim gets an item in the SNES one, he just goes "Yippee!". On the Genesis he goes: "Yippee!" "Wheee-doggy!", and a couple more if I can't remember or not....
And, try bouncing on the tires. The Genesis had a much more catoonish sound to it, and the SNES.... well, doesn't.
Further sound effects coverage? Okay.
Fight the transforming tire mini-boss in the first level. In the SNES one it's the same, rething metal sound for both Jim and the boss. On the Genesis it's much more distinguished between both Jim and Boss. When the boss punches Jim in the Genesis version, it makes a nice, heart warming "WAG-DOOSH" sound effect. In the SNES, it just.... sounds bleck.
The music, however, I'm still mulling on. I still like the Genesis song better, [not just because I've been humming it for the last 2 years, either.] I do kinda like that voice-like "hoo ho ha ho HO HO HOO HOO" in the background of teh SNES one, so we'll call it even on this level for now.
All in all..... I REALLY must say the Genesis outbeats the SNES version on this game. [most times Genesis versions of games are better, Battletoads and Double Dragon for one, another Aladdin]
So.... You can ignore what I say, SY and Skull, or defend your opinion, but I'm just stating my mind on the matter. [I am outnumbered and all.]
And I decided not to PM you two or wait til you're both on MSna gain because I thought someone like Lazlo or Jehuty could submit their own thoughts on this as well.
