Ahem, the purpose of this thead should be obvious (and if it isn't to you I hope you get cancer), basically, name your favorite games of the OMFG RPG GENRE!!!!!1!!1ONE!!!
Oh, and what is mine? Final Fantasy 6 (3 in the US), period, well-executed story, excellent cast, one of my favorite soundtracks ever (if not my favorite soundtrack ever), and pretty much the best villain to be on a game, EVUR: Kefka Palazzo.
-
Chrono Trigger.
Since I <3 Magus.
Although...FFVI is like my second favorite since Kefka and Locke to kick major ass.
-
Oh yeah, Chrono Trigger kicks ass too.
The plot was good, but the time travelling element tends to create plot holes.
-
Legend of Legia really had me. Legend of Dragoon was kick ass too, but I loved the art fighting system in Legia. Haven't had a chance to play Legia 2 yet, but I will soon.
-
And just to spite people who think FF7 is the best game ever before they EVEN post:
FFVII lives up to the hype if you're a trendwhore. The graphics were bad for their time, the music fails to live up to the standard Uematsu set for himself in FFVI, the plotline is severely cookie cutter, the characters are bland archetypes at best, the FMVs are shoddily done, the mini games are tedious and yet semi-required, and as a cherry on top, the translation was so horrible it's difficult to figure out just what the heck is going on at times. The only thing that doesn't suck about FFVII is its gameplay, which is simply generic. Sure, materia was a new concept, but it's not dissimilar enough from buying spells in stores to be groundbreaking. Even things like limit breaks which supposedly made the game unique had a very "been there, done that" feel, possibly because the idea was swiped right from the Street Fighter series. It's a fun game and all, but it's less than deserving of its own praise. The only reason people even seem to have for liking it so much is their maligned nostalgia for the first FF game they ever played, which was the seventh itteration of it. That's roughly the equivalent of discovering Good News For People Who Love Bad News and saying you've always been into Modest Mouse.
And no, saying Sephiroth had a big sword is not a decent argument.
-
I like the Story of FFVII
Its still a good game
-
To me, it's decent at most.
-
Chrono Trigger definitely, loved the music and the plot, also the game play was pretty different from other rpgs, such as having no battle screen and some other stuff too.
-
FFI > FFVII
but then again...
FFVII > FFVIII
My favorite RPG, hands down, without a trace of doubt, is Privateer. But since it's technically an FPS/space shooter too, I'll discount it for a pure RPG game.
Lufia 2 or Phantasy Star.
Lufia 2 had a lot of standard, unimaginative RPG elements to it, but they were so well implemented that it hardly mattered. For SNES, it's graphics were very well done. The music fits the tone to the situation even better than FFVI [not saying FFVI is worse, Lufia had music more fitting to the situation at the time.] About the worst thing with Lufia 2 is the final bosses are the same as the firt ones.... A bad move, I think. At least FF's keep the final bosses new and fresh, sort of. [they can try, but they will NEVER copy Kefka.]
Phantasy Star, being my first TRUE RPG [discounting Privateer] and my first console RPG, I have a lot of sentimental value to it, and compared to other 8-bit RPG's, it beats them down with a tit. sword. [classic abbreviation in the game.... XD] After playing FFI, then playing Phantasy Star, you'll see which is the far superior in statistics. The battle system, for example. In FFI, it's boring, hit here, take damage, boring boring. Very slow. In Phantasy Star, it's BACK AND FORTH HACK SLASH THIS AFTER THAT HARD TO KEEP TRACK OF BATTLE SPEED.
And Phantasy Star has FAR better graphics than FFI.
-
It's pretty unfair to compare a NES game with a Genesis game, 'specially in the graphical department.
FFVII > FFVIII
What the hell isn't better than FFVIII?(although, mabye BoF V...that made me vomit)
FFVIII did have better music than FFVII though...
-
Anything>FFVII OR FFVIII.
-
Anything>FFVII OR FFVIII.
hmmm I honestly liked FFVII more than FFX or FFX-2.
Though, all of the FF's for the sony consoles(except FFT and FFIX) have sucked bad.
-
Final Fantasy II (Or IV to you Japanese-wannabes)
-
FF 3 is the best game evars!
Why? Because my opinion is right. Logic will never work, becasue FFVII is sooooooo bad. You cannot argue it because I am right. OMG he's got a big sword. It must be bad.
*end sarcasm*

You forgot the fact that techno-fantasy isn't final fantasy. For that matter, neither was the movie.

FF6 and Wild Arms tie for best RPG for me.
-
FF6 and Wild Arms tie for best RPG for me.
I never ever could get past the begining of Wild Arms...almost beat Wild Arms 2 though... x:
I probably could now...but...finding it would be harder than just waiting for Alter Code F to come out. :3
Wild Arms does kick major ass though.
Oh and I looooooooovvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeeeee Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete. Thats has to be one of my favorites too.
-
It would have to be PSO online or Dragon Quest (8?) 3, also Fable.
-
It's pretty unfair to compare a NES game with a Genesis game, 'specially in the graphical department.
I MEANT THE FIRST PHANTASY STAR! The one for the Master System! Like I would compare an NES to a Genesis game..... -_-;;
Compare THAT to FFI.
And I really freaking wanna play Wild Arms.
-
Oops...I didn't know that :s
Well I don't think there's much of a diffrence anyways...
-
The original Phantasy Star, I believe.
EDIT: Oh wait, I didn't read the last post enough to realize Swift actually said it. I just saw the picture and instantly knew XD
-
There's PLENTY of difference between FFI and Phantasy Star.
It's first person.
The sprites have a LOT of colors and frams in them compared to FFI.
In motion, they look a LOT better.
In PS, the character doesn't just take a few steps, swing a swword a couple times, then back up, it may just show the sword strike in PS, but each and every sword has a different look to them [besides the basic, plain ones] and each PS character has a VAST difference in the others. The character difference is much more prominent in Phantasy Star.
And don't even get me started on Privateer.
-
Master System had slighty better hardware than NES, thus producing nicer looking games than NES.
"The more you know"
-
Then how come 90% of Master System games were crap?
I know, I know, I love the Master System to death, but really..... A lot of the games sucked.
Phantasy Star, Quartet, Rampage, Golvelius, Alex Kidd series and Afterburner were the only ones that I've tried and liked, maybe a couple others there too that I can't remember.
[and yes, I own all those Master System games on cartridge, and a Master System, to boot.]
-
It's quite obvious. Lack of support. Nintendo just had all the good companies working for them.
-
Ah yes..... I suppose so.... *sighs* Poor ol' Master System..... Oh well.... It had a gem here or there, at least....
-
Uhh... I guess Golden Sun, even though I never did finish Book II...
-
It would have to be PSO online or Dragon Quest (8?) 3, also Fable.
Woah! O.o
SOmeone else plays PSO. It's one of my "things" to do lately.
-
Actually, I think my favorite RPG would have to be Pokemon. I loved the original's battle system. However, I'm more into action games than RPGs. Games that throw you into a situation and make you react, y'know?
-

I am much the same. Honestly, I really don't like the RPG genre too much. Too slow, you wait around for a lot of stuff, in battles and that... [partly why I like Phantasy Star so much, the battles aren't slow by any means] But that's me.
-
RPG's are my favorite genre and stuff.
Which is weird coming from someone who rarely has any patience like me.
-
But RPG's usually have lots of violence. Always a plus.
-
Earthbound didn't have much violence...
but Eartjbound was pretty fun.Just sucked on how much you had to level in that dumb game...
-
My favorite RPG is definitely the one in Metal Gear Solid 3. Somehow Snake sees through his missing eye in first person view. =D
-
RPG's have better plotlines and storytelling than other games. Period. To me, Mega Man>all forever, but the fact is that when you play an RPG, you knowit's got better storytelling than just about anything else.
-
Metal Gear Solid and MGS 2 (Have yet to play 3) had stories that were better than most RPG's if you ask me.
-

Quoted for key word: Almost.
-
My favorite RPG of all is FF3, Chrono Trigger is a very close second. I do enjoy the Phantasy Star series, I own 3, 4, and Phantasy Star Online Episode 1&2+. I've also enjoyed the Mana series, and both Lunar Silver Star Story, and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue. I've also played Wild Arms 2 & 3, and both were pretty good.
-
I've also played Wild Arms 2 & 3, and both were pretty good.
Oh. My. Fucking. God. OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!! You've played Wild Arms 2? Awesome, dude.
-

Yeah, but the only thing I remember about it is the name of the main character, Kain.

Fixed for truth X).
-
SY, I call it FF4, because there's already an FF2, and it's entirely different than the SNES one.
When I say FFII, I mean the NES one.
When I say FFIII, i mean the NES one.
When I say FFIV, I mean the SNES one.
That's just how I work, anyways.
-

I remember Wild Arms 2 was awesome...there was a prison I remember...and the main guy could transform :o

I'm not Japanese, that's the only problem. If I'm talking about the Japanese II, I'll say it's the Japanese II, but I live in North America, where it clearly says II on my box and cartdridge, and that's good enough for me. We need to stop this Japan-wannabe bullshit.
They changed Dragon Warrior to Dragon Quest, changed Dr. Robotnik to Dr. Eggman, released what should have been Pokemon Ocean Blue in NA as the Japanese Leaf Green, etc. Get the idea? Sooner or later Capcom's gonna change the Mega Man series in America to Rockman....
-
I already call them Forte and Gospel by default. I think Stage Select [which I've been reading FAR before Byte started plugging it.] had something to do with it.
Regardless, this is off-topicness in an NMX thread.
Those two things do NOT mix.
-
When you get me started on a subject I'm interested in, it's hard for me to stop. Times like this I wish you had MSN =(
-
I do, but.... Not with my mom around. *sighs*
I s'pose PM's are about as good as we can get.
*remembers one time I was in a conversation with you for about 3 hours straight on just genesis games, I believe*
-
I still have all our MSN convos saved, thanks to their auto-save feature, heh.
-
Quote a few of them were barely a page long, though.
DAMMIT! We're doing it again! We're getting off topic in an NMX thread!
*flee's from the Final Creation wrath*
-

Yeah, but the only thing I remember about it is the name of the main character, Kain.
No, the main character's name is Ashley. He's got the power to transform into an extremely powerful knight. With an energy sword!
-
HIS name is Ashley? *anime headrub* oh dear.....
-
I shall now hammer swift with the Brain Freeze!
*Blasts swift with brain freeze*
Hah! He will now babble worse than Yamino!*shot*
But in all seriousness, I don't plug Michelle's site. I post there, and mention it.
-
*blast'd*
I likes meself some sugar on my pancakes in the morning. With baked beans and chef boyardee.
[translation: Hey! That wasn't good, Byte! And I've seen you mention Michelle's site a couple times here, which COULD constitute as plugging, since you said it was good!]
-
Only if it's not personal opinion. And besides common sense, humor, and compassion, that's all I speak.
*Shoots swift with anti-Brain Freeze setting*
-
VLERPERK
*returns to Harlock-esque normal self*
Ah, there we go...
Well, back to the topic of RPG's.......
Can I rant a little Privateer, even though it's an FPS RPG? [and I need NMX's permission, not anyone elses. his thread, after all]
-

Dammit! I've got FF4 on the brain.
-

Yeah, but that doesn't matter. He's so awesome. He's got a demon inside himself and it talks to him. There are several parts like this through-out the game, but when he does this, he turns into a knight in black armor (which kinda serves as a limit break in battles)
-
Syoshi wins. Bass' name is Bass, not Forte.

Thank you. Someone who agrees.

It's american bullshit that started the weird numbering.
Plus all of the games, cept III but it's coming, has been re-released.So when you say FFII you could be talking about the FFII in Orgins or Dawn of Souls or be talking about the FFII that is actually the crappy version FFIV.
So, in fact the FFII in america is both IV and II.
*blows up*
-
I'll say it for the last time.
I am American. Not Japanese.
I will call Dragon Quest Dragon Warrior and Dr. Eggman Dr. Robotnik thank you very much.
(http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b144/-SuperYoshi-/Picture58.jpg)for da win.
-
lucky thing I'm Canadian! *shot*
And I call him Forte because I think Forte sounds better than Bass.

Dr.Eggman is a gay ass name anyways. It's just confusing to call FFVI FFII with many diffrent FFII's >.<
-
No it isn't...I just say FF II (Japanese) when I refer to it, heh.
-

I SEE T3H TPH ON DERE!
SY, are webcams always that low of wuality, or just yours is?
-
Webcams always have low quality, that's how you can tell if someone's emo *shot*
-

Or too cheap to buy a digital camera.
-
I see..... Lucky thing for Witness. Heh heh.
I WANT TO RANT ON PRIVATEER! *steamroller'd*
-
In F-Zero literature, it is said that 99.9% of the planet Big Blue is covered in water, however, somewhere near the center, there is a massive energy source, that humans are trying to figure out ways to tap. There are also remnants of a lost ancient civilization.
-
All that from a racing game? Must be some manual.
-
Nope, that's in game data from one of the GBA games (GP Legend, I think)
-
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Either that, or Secret of Mana but Secret of Mana got frustrating at times (especially when playing alone).
-
Any game with "I AM NIGHTMARE X, I KICK ASS AND I AM GOING TO BREAK YOUR SPINE" on it's title.
Wait...
Nevermind.
-
I played that game, it was pretty good.
